A preparatory note

Background
There is an increased interest and focus on ESG performance of organisations. The trend is expected to have both a direct and indirect effect on information that corporations will be required to report on/consider in their businesses. Most businesses in India today, when reporting on ESG standards, use global frameworks like GRI, CDP, TCFD or their own format based on their comfort and availability of information. However Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) reporting is the first prescribed format by SEBI. It is a big step towards India’s very own ESG disclosure based on National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC).

The preparatory note that we have put together at Sattva has two purposes:

– It provides an easy-to-read summary of how various disclosures have evolved over time and what has been the key drivers for this shift.
– We have done a sample data analysis of top 20 companies across four industries, and checked for their readiness on BRSR parameters.

In our opinion, we believe that the lack of preparedness with respect to the sustainability disclosures creates a significant challenge for firms in both identifying and understanding the inter-relation and conflicts between various parameters. With the above in mind, we hope that the regulators and policymakers are seeking to utilise the standard and the disclosure to standardise the reporting and reduce the risks that firms are exposed to because of inconsistent interpretations.

We know this is just a start, and therefore we are continuously gathering data across industries, sectors and geographies, and reading the market that influences the trend and the opportunity for us. We hope you find the reports interesting and the way forward exciting. In case you have any questions or requirements to delve further, we would love to discuss it with you. Do feel free to write to us.
