Philanthropy in South and Southeast Asia is evolving—from individual giving to more collaborative approaches that address complex development challenges. From climate change and urban vulnerability to poverty and unequal access to services, these urgent, systemic issues require solutions no single actor can deliver alone. In this context, multi-stakeholder partnerships have emerged as a powerful strategy to drive impact at scale. Across much of the region, philanthropic support ecosystems remain nascent, fragmented, and under-resourced, with limited infrastructure for capacity-building, coordination, and peer learning. Countries like India and Indonesia show relative maturity, while others—such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka—face foundational gaps in four key enablers: capacity, capability, connection, and credibility.
A new study by Sattva Consulting, supported by WINGS’ #LiftUpPhilanthropy Fund and co-funded by the European Union—presents a first-of-its-kind mapping of the philanthropic support ecosystems and multi-stakeholder partnerships across seven countries: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka. Based on an analysis of 147 collaborative initiatives across sectors, the study highlights the critical role of philanthropic support organisations—both as capability providers and backbone institutions for collaboration.
This convening marks the official launch of the report based on the study, with the aim of fostering dialogue and action to strengthen the ecosystem for collaborative philanthropy in the region.
